The 7th Thai-Lao Meeting on Drug Law Enforcement Cooperation
As drug problems are seriously found in countless countries, one of those, Lao PDR inevitably gets impacts from the problems due to its geographical location adjacent to the production area. Moreover, information sources reported that Lao PDR also accommodated drug transit routes and probably significant drug production sites. The Thailand-Lao PDR Bilateral Meeting on Drug Law Enforcement Cooperation has been initiated in the Thailand and Lao PDR Operational Meeting on Drug Law Enforcement Cooperation in November 1997. The Operational Meeting had agreed on a new yearly-bilateral meeting floor on drug law enforcement and the two countries would take turns as a host. Up till now, the Thailand-Lao PDR bilateral Meeting has been conducted for six rounds, mainly to consider increasing closely cordial cooperation on drug law enforcement between two countries and to help each other to destroy obstacles found in the cooperation. ONCB, the focal coordinating drug agencies, always takes the close cooperation with Lao National Commission for Drug Control and Supervision (LCDC) as priority. The meeting this year is the 7th and hosted by Thailand during 24-25 August 2004 at Pattaya, Chonburi. The floor would be divided into two—operational level and policy level. The meeting’s objectives encompass; firstly, to promote law enforcement cooperation along the Thai-Lao borderline, to disclose problems and stumbling blocks and to jointly draw policies on drug law enforcement and solutions on drug problems consecutively. H.E.Mr.Phongthep Thepkanjana, Minister of Justice will be the Head of Thai Delegation comprising representatives from all concerned agencies, such as, ONCB, Customs Department, PNSB, Provincial Police 3 and 4, Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Public Health. As for Lao PDR, H.E.Soubanh Srithirath, Minister to the President’s Office and Chairman of the LCDC will lead 20 Laotian delegates from all related agencies to the meeting. 24-25 August 2004 |
