ONCB/DLO Meeting and Study Trip on Narcotics Crop Replacement & Alternative Development Programs in Thailand

 
The Office of the Narcotics Control Board has organized the ONCB/DLO Meeting and Study Trip on Narcotics Crop Replacement & Alternative Development Programs in Thailand during 22-24 February 2006 in Chiang Mai Province. There were 94 participants from international drug liaisons and Royal Thai authorities. 56 Royal Thai officers from Police Narcotics Suppression Bureau, Provincial Police Region 5, Chiang Mai Provincial Police, Division 3 - Border Patrol Police Bureau, 3rd Army Area-Royal Thai Army, Customs, Chiang Mai Administration and ONCB enrolled the meeting. In addition, 37 drug liaison officers (DLOs) station in Thailand from 16 embassies and 2 international organizations, i.e., Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, USA, ICPO-INTERPOL, UNODC – United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and an observer from the Colombo Plan Bureau presented.

The objectives of the meeting were to update DLOs with drugs situation in Thailand and to discuss on existing drugs control mechanisms in order to enhance future mutual cooperation in fighting against illicit drugs trafficking. Meanwhile, the field excursion at Angkhang Royal Agricultural Station in Chiang Mai highland area was aimed to reveal all international delegates on the success story and ongoing programme of crop replacement and alternative development projects according to His Majesty The King efforts and dedications. In addition, every representative has also received a brief on drugs trafficking and interdiction along border area by 3rd Army Area, Royal Thai Army at Norlare Army Base, Thai border rim, next to Myanmar land. Nevertheless, it was to reaffirm the world communities and general public on the strong determination of the Royal Thai Government in combating drugs.
